OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Terra is in Codex, ChatGPT Work and Copilot, and costs $1/$5 per million tokens on the API: half of Sol, a tenth of Astra.

OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on 26 October 2026. It is available in Codex and ChatGPT Work on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, and in GitHub Copilot on Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise. It is not available in plain ChatGPT Chat. On the API it costs $1.00 per million input tokens and $5.00 per million output tokens, half the price of GPT-6.1 Sol.

Where it is available

OpenAI's changelog describes Terra as "a fast, efficient model for professional work". It can interpret images and screens and act on what it finds across the browser, desktop and apps. In the ChatGPT desktop app it sits in the model list under Advanced. In ChatGPT Work it is selectable on the web, and Work also supports it on mobile. Enterprise access depends on workspace availability and administrator controls. Terra does not support UAE inference residency.

GitHub made the model generally available in Copilot the same day, with a gradual rollout, so it may not appear for every user at once. It reaches Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the Copilot cloud agent, the Copilot app, github.com, GitHub Mobile, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode and Eclipse. Business and Enterprise administrators control access through the model policy in Copilot settings. Under default model enablement, new models switch on automatically unless an admin has turned off the global default or disabled this model explicitly.

How it bills

Billing depends on where you use it. In Copilot, GitHub says Terra is billed at provider list pricing under usage-based billing, and points to its models and pricing documentation. The announcement does not mention a premium-request multiplier. Our Copilot Pro vs Pro+ explainer covers how those credits draw down. In Codex and ChatGPT Work, Terra is offered on the plans listed above; we found no usage-limit or credit figures for it in the ChatGPT or Codex changelog.

For the API, OpenAI's pricing page lists gpt-6.1-terra at $1.00 per million input tokens, $5.00 per million output tokens and $0.05 per million cached input tokens on the standard tier, for inputs up to 272K tokens. The batch tier halves that to $0.50 input, $2.50 output and $0.025 cached input.

Against Luna, Sol and Astra

GitHub positions Terra for "everyday agentic coding and terminal work" at lower cost than GPT-6.1 Sol. In early testing it solved noticeably more terminal and C# tasks than GPT-5.6 Terra, which Copilot retires on 16 November. It works best in focused, consolidated steps on well-scoped tasks.

ModelInputOutputCached input
GPT-6 Luna$0.10$0.50$0.01
GPT-6.1 Terra$1.00$5.00$0.05
GPT-6.1 Sol$2.00$10.00$0.10
GPT-6 Astra$10.00$50.00$1.00

Prices are per million tokens, standard tier. A million input tokens plus a million output tokens costs $0.60 on Luna, $6.00 on Terra, $12.00 on Sol and $60.00 on Astra. Terra is half the price of Sol, a tenth of the price of Astra and ten times the price of Luna. On the batch tier, Sol is $1.00 input, $5.00 output and $0.05 cached input, so batch Sol costs the same as standard Terra.

One naming point: the sources say GPT-6.1 Sol, not GPT-6 Sol, and the pricing page lists Astra as gpt-6-astra. No source we read compares the models on benchmarks, and neither OpenAI nor GitHub claims Terra matches Sol or Astra on hard tasks. Codex made Sol its default in CLI 0.161.0 on 7 October.

What teams should do

  • Copilot admins: check the model policy. If default enablement is on, Terra appears without a decision from you.
  • Enterprise ChatGPT owners: confirm workspace availability and, if you need UAE residency, plan around Terra's lack of support.
  • Cost owners: Copilot bills Terra at list price, so test it on well-scoped agentic tasks against Sol and measure cost per finished task.
  • API teams with work that can wait: compare batch Sol against standard Terra, since they cost the same per token.
